Estimating the Production Function of Multiproduct Firms by Trade Data

ABSTRACT
Complete product sales information is essential for accurately estimating product productivity. However, sales data are often incomplete. For instance, the combination of manufacturing survey and customs dataset typically provides detailed data on firm-level inputs and outputs, but only cover transactions related to exported products. To address this issue, I extend Valmari (2023) to estimate product functions for multi-product firms that face flexible-elasticity demand curves. Product markups are determined by the demand elasticity. Assuming a uniform constant return to scale (CRS) production function across all products within an industry, I obtain the firm markup by the production approach developed by De Loecker and Warzynski (2012). These estimated markups, along with the observed sales data for both the firm and its products, are used to address the unobserved input allocation bias in product productivity estimation.
